Welcome in Lozere, a country with four very distinctive natural regions

We invite you to discover the great landscapes of Lozere for the time of a week end or for a longer stay. You should be surprised by the great variety of our land with four very distinctive natural regions :

Aubrac - Denuded lands of basalt.
On the western edge of Lozère, the Aubrac is a wide expanse of unspoilt beauty rising to a height of nearly 1300 metres. This is a land of herdsmen where, every year in the month of May, is held the transhumance festival for its lovely tan cattle with their black-rimmed eyes. Here where nature reigns supreme, walkers, skiers and fishers will have an unforgettable time.

La Margeride - Lands of granite plateaux, hills and forests
At the North-East, Margeride is the most extensive natural area in Lozere. It is a land of granite where forest alternates with moors, grasslands and wide pastures. La Margeride is a secretive place of quiet and the murmuring of water flowing in the many rivers such as the Truyère so prized by fishers.

Gorges du Tarn and the Jonte, the Grands Causses and Lot Valley - Lands of limestone
The Causse Mejean is a wide prairie of yellow grassland as fascinating as the desert. The Causse of Sauveterre is less arid with a landscape of woodland. In the bottom of the Gorges du Tarn, a procession of pretty limestone villages and hamlets bask in the sunlight. The valley of the Lot crosses the department from east to west. This is a fertile region with many historic remains – castles, fortresses and churches – where life is sweet. Mende, the capital of the department, is noted for the beauty of its old centre and its impressive cathedral.

The Cévennes and Mont Lozère - Lands of shale and granite slopes
Nature is defiant but beautiful in the Cévennes. From Mont Aigoual to Mont Lozère in the south-east of the department. It is a land of shale and deep-cut valleys, covered by forests of beech, spruce and chestnut. The Cévennes National Park was founded in 1970 and has worked ever since to conserve this environment but also, as it is the only national park to be inhabited, to develop a harmonious relationship between man and nature.

All around Lozere, our hotels and inns will welcome you and we will do our best to share with you our passion for this country.
